Do you have a young adult stuck at the transition between dependent adolescence and adult independence? Has progress slowed or stopped altogether? Are you wondering what you can do to help? Here are 6.5 hours of answers!

All over the world increasing numbers of young people are experiencing problems seizing their adulthood. These individuals usually live at home (though not always), they’re financially dependent on parents, they’re unemployed or severely underemployed, they’re often socially isolated, and in some cases they are almost housebound.

Some people call this problem "failure to launch." Others use the Japanese term "hikikomori," or the British "NEET" (which stands for Not in Education, Employment, or Training). In this course we prefer the term "delayed transition to adulthood." Because it is a delay, not an end point. At least for most.

Your instructor, author of How to be Miserable in Your Twenties and other books, has been treating these young adults - and their parents - for over 20 years. This course as been developed specifically for parents who want to do what they can to support their young adult’s progression into adult life.

Why a course for parents? The parents are usually all-in with the idea of their son or daughter achieving adult independence - but they're often doing things that can inadvertently slow the process down, or not doing things that could speed things up.

In this course you’ll discover how to remove the barriers that are holding your young adult back, and how to support progress in a healthier, more satisfying direction. You'll learn about the nature of "delayed transition to adulthood" - how widespread it is, and the factors that seem to put certain young adults at greater risk.

How do you get things to change? Surprisingly, the answer is to look at this situation as a dance between you and the young adult - one that depends on both people taking part. You can spend a great deal of energy trying to change your son or daughter’s steps in the dance. But that probably won’t work.

This course shows how you can change your OWN steps and have the entire dance change as a result. It shows how parents, who often feel so powerless in this situation, can actually have a great deal of influence. It examines a wide range of areas, from groceries to finances to chores to internet to job hunting. You'll learn how to ramp DOWN some of what you’re currently doing, and where you can redirect your efforts for a greater impact. You'll also discover some of the hidden factors that accidentally sabotage progress.

You’ll get a workbook to accompany the course that provides summaries of every lecture and a series of exercises to help you apply the concepts in your own situation. There are 40 short videos in all, for a total of 6.5 hours of content.

Please keep in mind that this course is NOT a substitute for in-person individualized care and support. Many families will also benefit from work with a qualified mental health practitioner.
